Japura Scholarship Scheme (JSS)

The Japura Scholarship Scheme is a financial aid program where young undergraduates are provided with assistance during their studies. This program is managed and administered by Japura Alumni Australia Inc.

Japura Alumni Australia Inc. was incorporated in 2008 and is operated by past graduates of Sri Jayewardenepura university who now reside in Australia. The association is voluntarily administered by many dedicated members of the association.

The scholarship fund was established in 2011 by the Melbourne-based alumni association. A sincere thanks to all donors and sponsors; since we established this fund, we have built and secured a significant investment in Sri Lanka by providing ongoing financial support to Sri Jayewardenepura University students; the leaders of tomorrow.

The distribution of annual scholarships is funded by our current investment fund earnings. We thank all our scholarship sponsors and donors for the trust and confidence placed on us to manage their donations.

The Scholarship Scheme

Since 2011, approximately 352 students have benefited from the scheme and approximately Rs 8 million has been distributed to successful applicants. This is an annual funding program and now we open it to Sri Jayewardenepura undergraduate students who are studying in 2023 – the 12th consecutive year supported by Japura Alumni Australia Inc.

How Japura Scholarships Scheme Works

JSS operates on three simple principles.

• Donors and sponsors contribute either one time or annually to earn the right to nominate a scholarship recipient each year.

• Japura Alumni Australia Inc. manages and invests donated funds as a term deposit in Sri Lanka to earn a sufficient income to distribute to students.

• Monthly payments are made in instalments to selected students from the interest income of the term deposit.

Japura Scholarships Scheme Sponsorship Unit

1. Once-off donor contributions are our primary way to increase the number of scholarships offered every year. Investment for one scholarship (one student) is set at $AUD2,500.00 (subject to review). Therefore, a one-time payment of $AUD2,500.00 will give you the right to nominate a scholarship recipient every year.

2. An annual contribution of $150 can be donated for an annual scholarship. This will cover one annual scholarship; the donor or sponsor has the right to nominate a recipient for one year only.

Note: The effect of inflation on student expenses and investment income returns of the scholarship fund are considered in determining the value of the scholarship granted each year.

Student Benefits

The financial amount of the scholarship varies from year to year according to the interest income received. However, we have managed to maintain student benefits over the past five years at Rs.25,000.00 per year per student.

Application Process

All undergraduates of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura who are enrolled for the 2023 academic year are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Those who are awarded will receive LKR 30,000 in an instalment basis from April to December in the relevant academic year. For second to final year students, online applications are accepted from 19th December to 31st January 2023. First-year student’s scholarship applications will open from February/March 2023.

Outcome

All students nominated for scholarships except for first year undergraduates will be advised on or before 31 March 2023. Successful first year students will be advised on or before 30 April 2023.
